Our founder’s mother, who inspired the HSE/GED program for her daughter

History

Our founder’s mother (Barbaro Jean Pierson) had to drop out of high school to help her family with finances in the early 1940’s.  She was going into the 10th grade (as it was called back then).    About 40 years later, she made a promise to herself “when all my 8 children are have graduated from high school, I am going back to school and get my GED”.  So, at the age of 62 she obtained her GED (Now called HSE) from Ben Davis High School (Indianapolis, IN).

This is the reason our founder Patricia Marshall has GED/HSE as one of the main programs for Educate Beyond All Barriers, Inc. How we help the community is by a community based initiative designed to help the population of disadvantaged in target areas become successful citizens that help provide stronger economies in the communities they live in order to be self-sufficient.

Our founder and CEO is Patricia (Patti) Marshall and she believes that Educate Beyond All Barriers is Inspiring Lives, Removing Barriers.

Established in 2011, the organization was formed by a group of stakeholders who were able to see the positive correlation between unrestricted access to business and technology education, coupled with tertiary professional mentoring support, on attainment of meaningful employment and subsequent professional success. We are headquartered in the Indianapolis Downtown area where our students can access our services using public transportation if needed.

In the Indianapolis metropolitan area, specifically in low income inner city neighborhoods, much of the population is quite disadvantaged. Due largely in part to a lack in vocational skills, many young people are struggling with unemployment and underemployment. This has led an already poverty stricken areas into further distress. For example, currently the median per capita income in Indianapolis is a mere $24,430.  As a result, an estimated 18.9 percent of the population is living below the poverty level. This figure is quite discouraging compared to the 14.3 percent national average.

Certain populations, such as single parents, those exiting foster care, and military veterans, have experienced even more severe ramifications.  To add to this,  the unemployment rate in Indianapolis is also higher than the national average. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Indianapolis’ unemployment rate in November 2012 was a disheartening 8.6 percent.

EBAB views our students as a member of our extended family.  Faculty and volunteers work with each individual to ensure they achieve their educational and career training objectives.  We feel it is very important for the students to obtain the necessary skills needed to be successful in today’s competitive workplace environment.

Our education and technology programs provide skill areas that embrace such programs that can lead to being competitive in the job market today.
